Hiking clothes

Hiking clothes for day trips and hiking

Trekking and hiking in more challenging terrain may also require a little more from clothing. There are certainly as many opinions on clothing as there are hikers, and there is no one right way to dress. It is advisable to always keep the base layer on you while hiking, and sometimes the northern parts it might get cold in the summer, for added comfort and warmth. Merino wool is definitely worth considering when choosing a first layer, as this material is really warm and will stay fairly odorless even when hiking. Merino wool is also really comfortable right against the skin, and at least I myself do not cause any itching. The wool itself is an excellent material in all respects, and its warmth value, even when slightly damp, is quite good. The wool sweater is certainly a familiar garment for almost everyone in the northern hemisphere, and it is definitely worth packing in a backpack, from day trips to longer hikes. Compared to a fleece, for example, a sweater is really heavy, but the longevity of a decent sweater and the warmth it brings will easily pass a small weight difference.

Shell clothing is in this day and age, and they are great to work from hiking to walk with dog. Shell clothing comes in many prices and quality, the best shell clothing costs hundreds of euros, and certain brands are already approaching the equivalent of a thousand euros. Of course, these products are also slightly more resistant to wear and rain. The shell jacket is a basic equipment for many people when hiking. I recommend shell clothes for anglers, so not a little rainfall will hurt, but it will catch the fish despite the weather. I myself never use shell clothing when hiking, I like the basic carelessness of cotton, the problem with shell coatings is their durability against flames, for example. The cotton blend jacket does not mind if it sparks a little. Of course, cotton also absorbs water, and if it rains heavy, weight and uncomfort of the cotton gat get overwhelming. But there is nothing that a campfire shouldn’t have dried by the evening, and you can wax or treat cotton against water. Cotton-polyester hiking jackets have the advantage of being durable, and many top brands make really durable jackets and pants. These products can last for years even under heavy use.

Wool clothing is very functional for hiking, with sufficient warmth and durability

Winter Clothes

In winter clothing, the inner material used is either down or synthetic insulation, down (as with sleeping bags) is lightweight and has a great thermal insulation. Entry level down clothes you may experience lost of down from down pockets over time. The best manufacturers in the industry have been successful in preventing this, and the jackets from these manufacturers are really durable and long lasting. As a rule, I wear down because of its thermal insulation, especially in the forest when it’s freezing cold, it is nice to trust the garment and thus enjoy the trip completely alongside. First layers are also available quite extensively for hiking, merino wool seems to be the best material in this category, it is comfortable against the skin and the thermal insulation is really good. Underlays are also made fo bamboo and cotton. Bamboo being very good as a odor free material. Cotton can be uncomfortable due to it’s way of storing moisture and after a while you will feel cold because of the cottons capability of wicking moisture. Natural materials wool and down are widely used in the art of outdoor travels, these are top materials for harsh conditions, although the cost of these materials is a bit higher. However, I can recommend a decent sweater and merino wool underlay for just about anyone, they are extremely long lasting and therefore very ecological.

Take good care of your feet

When hiking you should take good care of your feet, one good thing is to use double socks when hiking. Hence, larger abrasions may be avoided. Knee-high socks are great with hiking boots, especially High-hiking boots can quite easily rub off the skin of your shin. A high-waisted sock will avoid this too. You can put a slightly thinner sock on the lower sock and then a thicker hiking sock on top. You should always keep extra pair socks on a hiking, very often socks are wet after a day’s walking. It is nice to put on dry socks and a dry first layer at bedtime, which lifts the spirit in the forest.

Clothing for hiking

In addition to the hiking clothing, I also have a lining, sweater, beanie, socks, gloves and a tube scarf. During the transitions, I wear double socks, a thin sock underneath and thicker on top. In practice, I always wear cotton-polyester hiking pants. Especially in spring, summer and autumn I prefer a high-quality t-shirt and a hiking jacket, which is also cotton-polyester. In the evening, when I arrive at the camp and as the weather cools down a bit, I will wear dry socks, underwear, a wool sweater, beanie and gloves. This works really well for you from spring to autumn. Winter hiking again causes your own headache in terms of clothing. Especially when it comes to freezing temperatures, sweat quickly takes over and clothing needs to be reduced quite quickly. The first 5 to 10 minutes it may be a little cold, if after 10 minutes you don´t feel warm, it is good to add one extra layer of clothing. It can and must be a little cool at first, if you start out with too much gear, you have sweated yourself in less than five minutes. Even in freezing weather, I may have a sheer first layer and a cotton-polyester travel jacket. So when it comes to break, it is nice to put on a jacket or sweater so you won’t be surprised by the cold. Winter hiking clothing can be practically the same as autumn hiking, though with the difference that a winter jacket should be worn instead. If you happen to own thicker trousers for winter, you should definitely bring these too. Especially for beginners, I recommend a little extra for the first nights, as short distance trips have the advantage of easily carry a few extra pounds. Everyone has the necessary clothes to spend the night in the woods, and you shouldn’t waste your gorgeous forest evenings by doubting your own clothing. Fine and fashionable hiking clothes are not as cool as the standard jacket and knitwear found in the wardrobe, though you may have a little more wear resistance and no need to worry about getting dirty.
